Verna “Lois” Long

The sweetest soul to ever grace this planet has left her earthly body to join her husband, family and friends in the next life.

Verna “Lois” Long, age 89, of Tecumseh, died peacefully at her home on January 26, 2017 with her daughter, Rhonda, by her side. She was born in Lewis, Kan., on February 17, 1927, the daughter of the late James and Letha (McFarland) Pratt. She married her sweetheart, Oliver Long on May 26, 1955 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Everyone knew her as Lois. She was a devoted housewife who helped create a happy memorable life for her family. Before she was married she traveled all over the country, went to business school and worked for the welfare office in Hutchinson, Kan.  Lois enjoyed gardening. She grew flowers and vegetables, especially sweet corn, tomatoes and beans. She had a passion for sunflowers and zinnias, which were her father’s favorite. Lois also enjoyed playing the piano, wood crafting, and was a great seamstress. She was a woman of grace and strength, who was gentle, kind, wise, and humble. Lois was quietly witty and will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Lois is survived by her children, Steven R. (Kathy) Long of Parma, Ohio, and Rhonda G. Long of Tecumseh, Mich; granddaughter, Courtney (Gil) Moyer; step-grandchildren, Leah and Erin Hanson; and her great-grandchild, Gilly Moyer.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oliver; brothers, James and Raymond; and her sisters, Valiere, Elda and Esther.

Funeral service for Lois was held on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017 at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Home. Burial will be at Brookside Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lenawee Humane Society or Hospice of Lenawee.
