THS teacher resigns amid police investigation

An unnamed Tecumseh High School (THS) teacher, who is under police investigation on allegations of an inappropriate sexual relationship between himself and a 17-year-old student, has resigned, according to a joint press release from Tecumseh Public Schools (TPS) and Tecumseh Police Department (TPD) sent Tuesday evening. THS Principal Griff Mills discovered an indication of an inappropriate relationship on school property on Thursday, July 23, and immediately contacted the police and the student’s parents, according to TPS Supt. Kelly Coffin. Police are still interviewing all parties and are trying to determine the extent of the involvement, according to TPD Sgt. Chad Rodgers, public information officer for the department, on Wednesday. He added there does not appear to be multiple students involved. Rodgers said there would be a polygraph test, and he hopes the investigation would be completed by September and then sent to the prosecutor. “This is a very sad time for our district,” said Coffin Wednesday. “It will not define us. It does not, in any way, shape or form, represent the professionalism of the Tecumseh Public Schools’ faculty. We also recognize this is a difficult time for everyone.”The TPS Board of Education said in the release it would work with police during their investigation.“The safety of our students is — and always will be — our top priority,” the joint press release stated.Coffin said she could not comment on the connection between a known staff member who recently resigned and the allegations.
