Teens charged with terrorism threat await second pretrial

The two teens that have been formally charged with Threat of Terrorism after being arrested for allegedly plotting to cause a threat of violence against Tecumseh High School (THS) students and staff are both released and are awaiting their second pretrial, which should occur in the next 30 days, according to Lenawee County Juvenile Probate Court Administrator John Drahuschak. In November, Drahuschak stated that one of the teens was being held in lockup at Maurice Spear Campus. The threat was thwarted after two anonymous phone calls were made to THS Assistant Principal Angel Mensing on September 11 regarding two students who were planning to cause harm at the school.Over the course of two days, September 11-12, the two students were identified and removed from school. On September 12, the Tecumseh Police Department took over the investigation, executing two search warrants within the City of Tecumseh.Drahuschak said that it was the prosecutor’s decision to try the two as minors, stating that each determination on whether to charge minors as adults or minors is made on a case-by-case basis. During the pretrial process, minors are evaluated and recommendations are made about their well being, said Drahuschak, adding that the purpose of juvenile court is rehabilitation and helping young adults. In an email from Tecumseh Public Schools Supt. Kelly Coffin on Tuesday, she wrote that the two students are no longer enrolled in the district.
