On January 29, the Tecumseh Indians wrestling team hosted Ypsilanti and county rival Adrian on an exciting night highlighting seniors on Senior Night. The Indians defeated Ypsilanti in the opening match 51-18 in a match that saw Tecumseh go down early 9-0 in the first three matches before Ben Solis got the Indians on track with a fall in the first period. From that point forward Tecumseh really did not look back.

During a brief intermission the seniors were honored. Wrestling for the last time at home in Tecumseh were Victor Coscarelli, Lucas Petty, Nick Tincher, Olen Boatright, Cayce Leclerc, Deandre Blayer, Byron Tate, and Mychal Bryan. Coach George Lesko said, “These seniors are leading the way for our younger guys. I have had to count on them in a big way all season, and they have stepped up. Senior night is always an emotional experience for us, these young men have put so many hours of work in a very difficult and demanding sport, and it comes to an end so quickly for them. And no matter the level of success that they have experienced, they have earned our respect and the respect of the wrestling community. Their commitment in this sport will serve them well during the rest of their lives.” Lesko continued, “In each senior night for many years now we have had a tradition for the seniors to sign the mat. We have a section of wrestling mat that the seniors have been signing since 2005. It has become a pretty special tradition.”

In the second match of the evening the Indians defeated Adrian 50-24. As usual it was an exciting match up. The wrestlers on both sides provide an extra level of effort when it comes to the Tecumseh and Adrian dual. Lesko said, “I was very happy with the effort for both our younger and more experienced guys. The match of the evening was at weight class 135. Two of the higher level kids matched up, and Victor Coscarelli came out on top with a late escape in the match to win 3-2 against Ramiro Guerro of Adrian.” Lesko continued, “Victor is very driven and focused right now, he is a senior on a mission. Ramiro is also a great wrestler and competitor, we knew it would be a great match. But, it was important that we got started off big in the match with Adrian and build on some momentum. And we got that from senior Byron Tate. Byron knew we needed a fast start and he provided that with a fall over Connor Wimmer of Adrian at 215. So much of high school competition is momentum, and getting that kind of win early fired up our effort.”

Going 2-0 on the night were Ben Solis, Bruce Rhodea, Coscarelli, Petty, Tincher, Brandon Rau, and Blayer.
