Tecumseh grapplers receive district champion crown

The Tecumseh Wrestling Team was crowned Division 2 district champions for the 17th straight time, beating the Adrian Maples 64-10 on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Adrian.

The match in the 160 weight class with the Tribe’s Brenden Dyer losing to Isaac Ramirez, giving Adrian a 3-0 lead. “From there we never looked back,” said Tecumseh Coach AJ Marry.

Alek Gurica took a void at 171, and Clayton Boatright and James Clark both won by pin at 189 and 215, respectively. Adrian won the next two matches. Caleb York of Adrian defeated the Indians’ Dominic Flores (285), 2-1, and Ray Torres of Adrian beat Tecumseh’s Jeremiah Torres (103) by major decision, 20-9. The score after that bout was 17-10 in favor of Tecumseh.

The Tribe grapplers went on to win the final eight matches. Josh Hilton (112) pinned Blake Johnson, and Vince Perez (119) won by technical fall over Ethan Spagnoli, 21-6, to extend the lead, 28-10.

The Indians pinned the next three weight classes. Victor Coscarelli pinned Rimero Gurrero Jr. at 130, Lucas Petty pinned Bryce Koch at 135 and Nick Tincer pinned Connor Tokarz at 140.

The Indians finished out the match with Lansten Livingston and Olen Boatright receiving voids at 145 and 152, respectively.

During the day, seven Tecumseh wrestlers advanced to the individual regional meet, including four champions — Hilton, Perez, Kellen Patton (125), and Clayton Boatright. Coscarelli was also in the finals and finished second at 130. Petty and Brenden Dyer (152) also advanced by taking fourth place.

They hosted team regionals on Wednesday and will compete on Saturday, Feb. 16 in the individual regional tournament at Warren Woods Tower High School with a chance to qualify for the individual state meet at Ford Field in Detroit.
