Tecumseh girls open season on the road, split with Hornets

It took an opening season loss to get Tecumseh’s varsity softball team in sync and swinging for a win in game two at Saline on Monday, April 14, with the Indians starting out the 2013-14 with a two game split.Tecumseh lost the first game 4-1 with Kayla Kormos pitching all seven innings and striking out two. She allowed just two earned runs in her senior season pitching debut. Sophomore Kayla Wild went 2-for-3 with the Indians lone RBI. Senior Morgan Monahan had a double while senior Katie Martin and freshman Danielle Nowak each added singles.“We weren't quite in sync in the first game,” said Tecumseh head coach Jeff Nowak. “A few bad swings, a couple of base running mistakes and fielding errors cost us a chance in this game. It wasn’t that we played overly bad, as Saline has an excellent team, but we didn't do ourselves any favors in this one.”Tecumseh won the second game 5-4.Wild earned the win, giving up four runs while striking out four. Tecumseh senior Anneka Hart went in on pitching relief in the last inning to earn the save, getting the last batter to ground out.Senior Kelsea Kaliszuk had a double with a pair of RBI for Tecumseh while junior Claire Burnett, Monahan, and Nowak each added a hit and an RBI. Martin, sophomore Maggie Foss and Hart each added singles.“We were much better at the plate in this game taking better swings and drawing four walks,” said coach Nowak. He said the Indians’ big breakaway inning was a four-run fourth inning that gave Tecumseh a 5 -0 lead. With the split the Indians start out with an overall record of 1-1 and 0-1 in the Southeastern Conference White Division.
