Tecumseh boys first, girls second at Annual County Championships

Tecumseh’s varsity boys cross-country team placed first at the Lenawee County Championships on Saturday, Oct. 11, while the girls finished second behind Adrian at Blissfield’s Gerber Park.Madison placed second in the boys division while Hudson was third.Tecumseh’s top five finishers included Andrew Waite (8th, 17:38), Jarred Waite (9th, 17:38), Jack Lacasse (10th, 17:47), Jeff Case (12th, 17:51) and Gabe Lopez (19th, 18:17, personal best record, PR) “I could not be happier for this group of seniors,” said Tecumseh coach Eddy Foley. “They have won this meet two out of the last three years.” They have really been working hard for me for the last three years and to see them holding the big trophy today and the smiles on their faces was really rewarding. “Andrew and Jarred Waite finished with the same time after 5000 meters with 100 meters of that in a dead sprint with elbows flying, no one wanting to give an inch. Andrew just edged Jarred at the line. “This was truly a solid team effort today and I could not be happier as a coach. We had seven all-time personal records and three season bests. Our kids are starting to peak at the right time.”The Indians race next on Thursday in the Southeastern Conference championships.Blissfield placed third in the girls division while Briton Deerfield was fourth.The top five finishers for Tecumseh’s girls were Christina Sawyer (1st, 19:39, new course record), Kristina Ziemer (12th, 21:05, PR), Jessica Tebbetts (13th, 21:06), Kelsey Hammer (31st, 22:47) and Elyssa Hedrick (23:22, PR).“We had some outstanding performances today! When eight out of 11 runners have either their all-time best or season-best times, you know that they were determined to leave everything they had out on the course today,” said Tecumseh coach Jill Stockford. “Congratulations to Christina [Sawyer] for a great win and bringing back the individual title back to Tecumseh.”Clinton’s girls placed 10th, led by Shianne Muessig (25:24) while the boys placed ninth, led by Brady Fowler (16th, 18:10).
