Self-inflicted gun shot wound kills three-year-old boy

FRANKLIN TWP. — Three-year-old Jonathan Kaufman died Sunday after accidentally shooting himself with a pistol, according to the Michigan State Police, who are investigating the shooting. At approximately 1:25 p.m., police and rescue personnel were dispatched to 12919 Tipton Hwy. to render first aid, however, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. Kaufman was alone inside the home when it appears he found a loaded .40 caliber handgun that was being stored in a closet and accidentally pulled the trigger, according to the Michigan State Police. Kaufman’s father and older brother were outside the home when the shooting occurred. The incident is still under investigation by the Michigan State Police. Upon completion of the investigation, a report will be submitted to the Lenawee County Prosecutor’s Office for review, which is standard protocol. Troopers were assisted by Deputies from the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office and EMS personnel from Lenawee Community Ambulance. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family.
