Sam P. Vreeland

Sam P. Vreeland enjoyed a long, productive and wonderful 100 years and 17 days of life. Sam was a very humble and proud man who took great pride in his family and his service to his country. Sam was born August 5, 1915 in Detroit, Mich., the son of Sam P. Vreeland Sr. and Sela (Dunbar) Vreeland. He graduated from Cooley High School and Wayne (State) University. Upon graduation, he started a career with Standard Oil Company that lasted 37 years. Sam enlisted in the Army in April of 1941.He served honorably during WWII in both the United States and Italy in the 5th Army. After five years of service he was discharged in 1946 and returned stateside to resume his career as a commissioned agent with the Standard Oil Company. After stops in Detroit, Mich., and Monroe, Mich., he settled down in Britton, Mich., for the remaining 25 years of his career. In August of 1948, he married Marian Hubbard in Erie, Mich. She preceded him in death in May of 2006. In addition to his parents and wife, his brother Robert D. Vreeland preceded him in death. Upon retirement Sam and Marian enjoyed 25 years in Springhill, Fla., before relocating to Ann Arbor, Mich. Sam is survived by three daughters, Nancy (Randy) Frazier, Sarah (Ira) Mark and Amy (Art) Bodkin; his granddaughters Dr. Lori (Dane) Schimmel, Jamie (Jeff) Downs, Sarah (Justin) Smith, Lindsay Smith and Rachel (Chris Hervey) Mark; his great grandsons, Zane Schimmel, Cooper and Reece Washburn and Harlan Smith. Sister-in-law Virginia Vreeland also survives him. Cremation has taken place and there are no services planned.The family would like to extend gratitude to the staff of Hillside Terrace Retirement Community for their extraordinary care and compassion the past nine months.
