Richard Spencer Whelan
Richard Spencer Whelan, age 82, passed away on February 3, 2017 at Cambrian Assisted Living under Hospice of Lenawee. He was born on March 10, 1934 in Tecumseh, Mich., the son of the late Fay and Augusta (Kurtz) Whelan. He was united in marriage to Shirley Teske on June 26, 1954 and she survives.
Richard was the third-generation owner and operator of Hoyt E. Whelan Co. in Tecumseh for 40 years before retiring in 2009. He was a past member of the Tecumseh Jaycees and member of the Tecumseh Club. He served on Grace Lutheran Church of Tecumseh council for several years. Richard dedicated his life, to his work, family, friends and fishing.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, Kevin King, his daughter, Janis Whelan and Mort Leith of Savannah, Ga.; sister-in-law, Sally Whelan of Tecumseh; Connie King of Tecumseh; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Larry A. Whelan in 1974 and his brother, Jack in 2006.
Burial for Richard was Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017 at Brookside Cemetery.
