Redskins’ go 5-0 to win Grass Lake’s wrestling tournament

Clinton’s varsity wrestling team went 5-0 to win Grass Lake’s team tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 23.
 
The Redskins opened with a 56-10 win over Chelsea and defeated Zeeland West 52-26 in round two. In the third round the Redskins faced the hosting Warriors and won 64-12 and Pittsford 78-6 in round four. Clinton defeated Reading 65-18 for the tournament title. 
 
Going 5-0 for the day for the Redskins were Christian Minard (103), Noah Comar (112), Evan Shovels (119), Nick Lacoss (135), David Chantelois (152), Nick Rolland (160) and Austin Popp (215).
 
Clinton’s Garrett Phillips (140) finished 4-0; Josh brown (hwt.), 3-0; and Jake Phillips, 4-1. Verneri Korkee (171) and Trent Sexton (189) had three wins each. 
 
Clinton traveled to Remus Chippewa Hills High School on Saturday, Dec. 19, to compete in a 24-team tournament and returned with second place. 
 
Comar was the loan champion for Clinton and was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Wrestler. 
 
Clinton had two other wrestlers make it to he championship match but both lost and finished second. Rolland lost his championship bout 7-6 at 152-pounds while Ethan Vaughn fell to last years state champ in Division 3 from Williamston. 
 
Popp brought home Clinton’s only third place finish after pinning his opponent from Berrien Springs in 4:28. 
 
Sexton (189) and Shovels (119) both finished fourth.  Finishing in fifth place were Clinton’s Chantelois (160), Christian Minard (103) and Jake Phillips (140).  LaCoss (135) and Korkee (171) both claimed seventh place for the Redskins.
 
Clinton competes next at Canton’s team tournament on December 30.
