Pious Parodies: The Bible in Graphic Novels

Date:
Monday, April 15, 2019 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Location:
First Presbyterian Church, 156 E. Maumee St., Adrian, MI

Scott S. Elliott, PhD Director, Women's and Gender Studies from
Department of Philosophy and Religion Adrian College will present this event. Artists have used comics and graphic novels to portray biblical narratives for a long time. Some of these works seem to offer a clever hook for devotees, occupying the imagination in order to safely entertain the existing flock or to entice would-be converts into the fold. Others seem anything but reverent. Surprisingly, it is often the works that strike us as the most impious that best capture and animate the most provocative and potentially productive aspects of biblical literature. Instead of presenting images as supplements to the biblical text in a way that affirms what the reader thinks she knows already, these works take advantage of the comics medium to discomfit readers and elicit greater engagement.
