Patriots host ‘Dogs for Homecoming

It didn’t take long for Morenci’s varsity football team to gain control during Britton Deerfield’s Homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 2. The Bulldogs opened the Tri-County Conference (TCC) contest with a kickoff return to the end zone and held complete control throughout the evening to finish with a big 62-14 victory.BD coach Marcus Hosman wasn’t satisfied with his team’s overall performance. “We need to play a complete game in all facets so that players can see our team’s full potential,” he said, adding that the Patriots also had to deal with a few injuries. “We battled a few injuries, and as you know, don’t have a ton of depth,” he said. “We need to improve our tackling on defense, and play more consistent on offense.”Morenci’s two-point conversion pass failed following the 80-yard kickoff return but the Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead within the first 15 seconds of the game.After punting the ball on its first possession, the Patriots stopped Morenci’s second offensive drive with Mitchell Logan intercepting a Bulldog pass on BD’s own one-yard line. However, a couple of plays later BD quarterback Justis Kimerer threw a pass that was intercepted and returned into the end zone. The Bulldogs went on to end the first quarter with a 22-0 advantage and closed the first half leading 38-0.Alec Dusseau hauled in a 60-yard touchdown pass from Kimerer and a good two-point conversion put the Patriots on the scoreboard in the third quarter.BD scored its second and final touchdown in the fourth quarter with Kolyne Suydam rushing 54 yards into the end zone.Kimerer was 8-for-17 passing for 121 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.Suydam carried the ball 10 times for one touchdown and 63 yards and had five receptions for 40 yards to lead BD’s offense.Dan Marotz had five tackles for BD.The Patriots fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the TCC with the loss. Morenci improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the TCC. BD faces Sand Creek (2-4, 1-3 TCC) on Friday.
