Parents want son to be able to skydive locally

To the Editor,My husband and I recently moved back to our hometown of Tecumseh with our four children; one of which is an aviation enthusiast. He is 11 years old and has plans to skydive as soon as he is able, preferably in his hometown. Obviously, I have no safety concerns if my son plans on becoming a pilot and skydiver; actually I know for a fact he is in safe hands with Skydive Tecumseh. Our house is right along the flight path of the Skydive plane and the plane flies at a low altitude over the house. It is not the only plane that flies over the house either, on a daily basis we have many planes fly overhead. We are never bothered by any “noise” from any plane.A friend of ours is an airplane mechanic and she came over for dinner the first summer we bought our new home and asked me as the Skydive plane flew over what I thought of the noise. I was so surprised; I hadn’t considered it noise at all. Our whole topic conversation changed to how great the culture is in Tecumseh and what we loved about Meyers airport and the people that came from all over Michigan to skydive.Skydive Tecumseh is a truly unique and local business. Shannon and Franz are active in our community and their family is an asset to Tecumseh. We need young, innovative risk takers to fuel our local economy and to grow our city. From what I have read Mr. Aalto is not a city resident nor do his children attend our local schools. He attempts to dissuade the general public from worrying about Skydive as he claims he will somehow bring business to Tecumseh. Yet, he offers no details. It is clear that our town is losing something unique and innovative and we are hurting a local family that has given so much to our town. From the outside, because so few facts and details are being released, it seems that the Aalto family is very out of touch with what is important to our community. It seems obvious that claims over ‘safety’ and ‘insurance’ are not Mr. Aalto’s true concern; I feel he has bigger, more personal ambitions and any local business that stands in his way will be dissolved. How can we as a community allow outsiders to change what is great about our city? I know I will be boycotting any business associated with the Aaltos.Safca FrostTecumseh
