Melvin L. Wegner

Melvin L. Wegner, age 93 of Clinton, died Thursday, July 24, 2014 at home with his son Paul and daughter-in-law Cecil at his side and under the gentle care of Hospice of Lenawee. He was born on March 4, 1921 in Blissfield, Mich., the son of Emiel and Nellie (Downing) Wegner. He married Josephine Henson in 1947 and later married Virginia Kish on October 14, 1978 and she preceded him in death on June 18, 2012.Mel was a Veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII. He was a farmer all his life in the area, owned and operated Wegner Market in Tecumseh from 1959-1965 and also worked for Tecumseh Products for 42 years until he retired in 1982. Mel was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tecumseh, American Legion Post No. 34 and VFW Post No. 1187 both in Tecumseh and served selflessly and proudly as Chaplain for both for over 30 years. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all those who knew and loved him.Mel is survived by his step-mother, Irene Alverson of Brooklyn; two sons, David (Joyce) Wegner of Adrian and Paul (Cecil) Wegner of Tecumseh; one daughter Jean (Gary) Gailbraith of Dunedin, Fla.; two half sisters, Debbie Harding of Onsted and Susie Wegner of the Hawaiian Islands; nine grandchildren, Sarah, Nique, Steven, Lisa, Rachel, Jennifer, Angie, Dawn and Leslie and two great grandsons Jack and Max. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and eight sisters.At Mel’s request, cremation has taken place. A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. at Ridgeway Cemetery on Friday, August 1, under the auspices of the Tecumseh American Legion Post No. 34 and VFW Post No. 1187. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tecumseh American Legion or Tecumseh VFW Posts or to the Ann Arbor VA Hospital. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.handlerfuneralhomes.com.
