Louis C. Velarde

Louis C. Velarde, Sr. age 77, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich.  Born on March 31, 1939 in Detroit, Mich., the son of Manuel T. and Mary Lou (York) Velarde. He married Dorothy M. Gaston on December 24, in Detroit, and they shared 57 years together.

Louis was a skilled tradesman, retiring from Sheet Metal Workers Local 80 in 1997.   “Louie” had a strong, commanding presence who was always in control and held strong convictions. His work ethic was matched by none. He never took the easy way of doing anything; rather the best way. His hardworking drive stayed with him until the end.

There was a gentler side of Louie that few people saw outside of the family; one you could always count on for help and support. He would go out of his way to make sure they were taken care of, or at the very least, share his vast knowledge so they could take care of themselves. His laughter and unique sense of humor will resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

Louis is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; his son, Louis C. Velarde Jr. and daughters, Dorothy M. Baker and Gloria (Tim Klanke) Velarde, all from Clinton; and daughter, Sheree (Paul) Mazer of Carleton, Mich. Additionally, he leaves his grandchildren: Michael, Paul Jr., Paula, Ken, Kolton, Aaron, Angela, Christina, Dan and Wyatt; his brother, David M. Velarde of Corona, Calif.; his sisters, Clara Stoker of Rhodesdale, Md., and Patricia A. Morgan of Brooklyn, Mich.; and 18 great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; Dawn Alvedy, a daughter; Manuel J. Velarde, a brother; and Mary Ann Cline, a sister.

Visitation for Louis will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016 at the Clinton Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Aug. 19, 2016 at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m. with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
