Kurt Busch wins rain-soaked Cup race at MIS

Drivers muttering the old nursery rhyme ‘Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day,’ had their wishes washed away at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, June 14, when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Quicken Loans 400 was called off after 138 laps due to inclement weather with Kurt Busch in the lead.Busch started 24th and took his first and only lead on lap 133, in his No. 41 Chevrolet backup car, when Kyle Larson and his No. 42 Chevrolet had to make a pit stop for fuel. Five laps later the heaviest rain of the day began to fall from a large storm cell and a little while later Busch was declared the race winner after completing 276 of 400 miles.“It was a fantastic group effort,” Busch said in a packed victory lane. “To be able to pull the backup car out and to have it as prepared as it was and then to have the extra work that went into it, all the crew members that Tony Gibson [crew chief] leads rolled up their sleeves, jumped right on it and we made a race-winning backup car.”Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished second in his No. 88 Chevrolet, followed by Martin Truex, Jr., in the No. 78 Chevrolet. It was the 14th top-10 finish in the first 15 races this season for Truex Jr., the first time that has happened since Richard Petty did it in 1969.The race had five caution flags, which included an accident on lap 52 where Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Toyota just missed hitting his brother Kurt Busch and slammed into the wall coming out of turn four.Kasey Kahne started on the pole after posting a speed of 201.992 mph in qualifying on Friday. His No. 5 Chevy finished 15th in the 43 car field. The victory was Busch’s second of the season. He won for the third time at Michigan and for the 27th time in his career.
