Joanne Hartzell Hasselschwert Greene

Joanne Hartzell Hasselschwert Greene, 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on May 22, 2016.  Her love of God, family and children was evident throughout her life.  She was a long standing member of St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Tecumseh, Mich.

She was born on May 16, 1936 in Tiffin, Ohio, to Victor Francis Hartzell, Sr. and Margaret Ann (Valentic) Hartzell.  She was the oldest of their 16 children, eight surviving: Victor Jr. (Helen), Rita Hasselschwert, John, Jerry, Donald a.k.a. Bobo (Jeanne), Anthony and Roger (Jane).

Joanne grew up in Defiance, Ohio, graduating from Defiance High School in 1954. She attended Mary Manse College and graduated with a teaching degree from the University of Arizona.  She shared her love of learning and of God with her elementary students in the Catholic Schools in Toledo, Ohio.

She married John William (Jack) Hasselschwert on June 30, 1956. He preceded her in death on January 17, 1964. She married Fay Greene on July 2, 1966 after his wife, her cousin, Helen (Babe) (Reiniche) Greene passed away.

Joanne is survived by: her three children, daughter Ann (David) Darke of Bowling Green, Ohio, daughter Suzanne (Larry) Miller of Blissfield Mich., and Charles (Caryl) Greene of Reidsville N.C.; three stepchildren, stepson Daniel (Elaine) Greene of Virginia Beach Virginia, stepson James (Elizabeth) Greene of Britton Mich., and stepdaughter Mary Helen (Patrick) Hayes of Adrian Mich.; and a beloved daughter-in-law Mary Suzanne Hermanns Greene; 16 grandchildren (Thomas Greene, Kristin Recio, Kim Struble, Jennifer Hayes, Jason Greene, Marcus Greene, Julie Righter, Mike Greene, Megan Hayes, Matthew Greene, Nicole Darke, Jessica Miller, Brittni Darke, Lauren Williams, James Greene, Samantha Greene) and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Megan Hayes and grandson Marcus Greene.

Visitation for Joanne will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Thursday, May 26, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church at 11 a.m. with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will follow at Lenawee Hills Memorial Gardens. 

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Children’s religious education at St. Elizabeth’s in Tecumseh and Hospice of Lenawee County.
