Joan Roberts

Joan Catherine Roberts, age 76, entered peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior, at home on January 15, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 19, 1940 in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of the late Lester and Alberta (Klink) Handy. On October 1, 1955, Joan married Gary B. Roberts in LaGrange, Ind., and they shared 61 wonderful years together.

Joan was a lifelong resident of Tecumseh and a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh, where she was the organist for over 26 years.

She served as a former deacon and elder for the church and enjoyed being the gardener at the church also. Joan taught piano for over 40 years, and was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She loved gardening, crocheting, traveling, camping and waterfalls.

Her strength and bravery was profound, as she never complained about her fight with cancer and was always the first person willing to assist others. Those that knew Joan would agree she was the strongest, bravest, most kind-hearted, and giving person they knew, with a smile that didn’t stop. She will be missed.

Joan is survived by her loving husband, Gary; her children, Debbie (Jeff) Baldwin of Clinton, Mich., David (Julie) Roberts of Inverness, Fla., Sondra (Istvan) Szirmai of Clinton, Mich., and Suzie (Bob Palmer) Roberts of Greenville, Mich.; her 13 grandchildren; her sisters, Geri (Jerry) Eaton of Tecumseh, Mich., Barb (Fred Long) Bond of Tawas, Mich., and Lois Quinn of Crane Hill, Ala.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Max Handy.

Visitation for Joan was held on January 17, 2017 at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes from 4-8 p.m. The funeral service was January 18, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Cathi King officiating. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial followed at Brookside Cemetery.
