Jane E. Bird

Jane E. Bird, age 95 of Britton passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 at Kingston Residence of Sylvania.  She was born April 2, 1922 in Onsted to the late Clare and Ethel (Case) Dowling. On October 8, 1942 in Napoleon, Ohio she married Raymond Bird and he preceded her in death on September 6, 2000.

Jane was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Britton. While wintering in Arizona she attended the Desert Chapel United Methodist Church in Apache Junction. She and her husband were very active in missions and went to the Appalachians in Kentucky to help the families there. Jane crocheted scrubbers for family, friends and for missions at both of her churches. She was honored by the UMW at both churches in 2011 for making over 8,000 scrubbers for mission funds. She was active in the Extension Club, a 4-H leader and had been active in the Ridgeway School’s PTA. Jane was an avid and very serious card player.

Jane is survived by four daughters, Carol (John) Marckel of Toledo, Nancy Stapleton of Britton, Sharleen Burgess of Tecumseh and Denise Bird of Adrian; six grandchildren, Greg (Christy) Marckel, Kelly (Keith) Bitter, Sean (Vandana) Stapleton, Courtney (Dave) Reiser, Amie (Mike) Trombley and Lisa (Nate) Wild; great-grandchildren, Chase and Siena Marckel, Jacob and Ethan Bitter, Sandhya, Jaiden, Rohan and Jaya Stapleton, Calder, Tessa and Alyse Reiser, Michael, Nicole, Chloe and Collin Reum and Ella, Reese and Blake Wild. 

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Roberts.

Funeral services for Jane will be held at noon on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017 at Grace United Methodist Church in Britton with Rev. Mark Zender officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes and on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.  Burial will be in Lenawee Hills Memorial Gardens in Tecumseh. 

Contributions may be made to the church’s memorial fund or American Bible Society.
