Indians are district soccer champions

After finishing the district soccer championship match without either Tecumseh or Milan scoring a goal, even with 20 minutes of overtime action, the Indians secured the title by beating the Big Reds in a penalty kick (PK) shootout.

Jonny Montoya scored Tecumseh’s first PK shot and Milan missed before Ollie Autrey took the Indians’ second shot. Although it was a great strike, according to Tecumseh coach Jerry Nowak, Milan’s keeper made a save and then tied the contest 1-1 with a netter.

Josh Nowak hit the net on the Indians’ next shot and Tecumseh’s keeper, Jacob Soules, denied Milan’s following shot to give the Indians a 2-1 advantage.

Owen Swan buried the ball into the right-hand corner and Milan also connected to make it a 3-2 match. Noah Crots secured the win with a ball sent just under the crossbar.

“It was quite a celebration on the field and the awards and the district trophy were presented. A great night for the program,” coach Nowak commented. “I couldn’t be happier for these guys, we’ve put in a lot of work from the weight room to summer conditioning to team camp to training on the pitch. However, I reminded the guys that we’re not done yet. This ride isn’t over and we’ll work hard to be ready for a very good Dearborn Divine Child squad that we are paying on Wednesday.”

On Thursday, Oct. 22, in the first round of districts, Tecumseh beat Adrian 3-1 with goals scored by Autrey and Gabe Giovannone (2). Assists were recorded by Autrey, Swan and Montoya.
