Gladys “Earline” Zarnoch

Gladys “Earline” Zarnoch, age 88, of Tecumseh and Clinton, Mich., died at the Lenawee Medical Care Facility in Adrian, Mich. Few knew Earline was not her first name as she preferred her middle name. When you heard Gladys, some family would use her first name as a way to provoke and tease, resulting in laughter and a smile.

Earline was born June 5, 1928 to Earl and Jennie Holcomb in Petersburg, Mich., who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Petersburg High School where she met Peter Zarnoch, who became her husband of 60 years. After graduation from high school, Earline worked in her mother’s general store in Petersburg, but spent most of her life as a devoted wife and homemaker. Earline’s baking skills were evident, especially her Christmas cookies, which were always a family treat. In addition, she enjoyed gardening, canning and time spent on the farm. Among other activities were frequent trips to the UP and visits to family in Toledo, Texas and Arizona. Earline and Pete always found time to devote to family activities of their nephews, nieces, and grand nephews and nieces. All were thought of as their own children.

Earline was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; infant sister, Cleo Holcomb; sister, Mildred (Alfred) Hutchinson and nieces, Cheryell (Ted) Lunsford and Goldie Ann Zarnoch.

She is survived by nieces Nadine Lunsford and Mary Kay Zielinski and nephews William F. (Mary Ellen) Werynski, Walt Zarnoch and Terry Chorzempa.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude for the care, comfort and compassion shown by staffs at Hospice of Lenawee, Lenawee Medical Care Facility, Herrick Manor and Fieldstone at Tecumseh Place. Her family could rest at night knowing she was well cared for and safe. Special thanks to Dr. Filomena Buenaflor and her staff for the many years of treating Earline not only as a patient, but a person as well. A deep gratitude of thanks to Joe and Ruth Bakus for their many visits, flowers and friendship and to “Smithy,” who was always there when needed, especially for Peter, the family thanks you.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2017 at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh, with Rev. Fr. Daniel Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Tecumseh. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2017, preceding the funeral service.
