Former Tecumseh High School swimmer Rachel Waite qualifies for 2016 Olympic Trials

Former Tecumseh High School (THS) swimmer Rachel Waite recently qualified for the Olympic Trials during the summer. The weekend of July 22-25, Waite participated in the Central Zone Sectional Championships at Ohio State University. While representing Southern Michigan Aquatic Club (SMAC), she qualified for the Olympic Trials in two events, the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke. She placed fourth in the 100-meter and qualified with a time 1:10.77 and finished second in the 200-meter with a qualifying time of 2:31.97. She also finished fifth in the 200 Individual Medley, 34th in the 100 freestyle, 48th in the 200 freestyle and 119th in the 100 butterfly. The Olympic Trials are scheduled for next summer, June 26-July 3, in Omaha, Neb. Waite also competed in the Michigan Long Course State Championship, July 31-August 2, at Saginaw Valley State University. She led her SMAC team to a second place overall finish by scoring first in the 100- and 200-breaststroke, 200 Individual Medley, 100-freestyle and 400 Medley Relay. She finished third in the 200-freestyle, eighth in the 800-freestyle relay and second in the 400-freestyle relay. Waits achievements earned her the High Point Award for the top scorer in the woman's division. Waite will be returning to Oakland University for her Junior year this fall.Also competing for SMAC at both meets were current THS swimmers Karlee Marsh and Brynn Nevins. At Sectionals Marsh finished 48th in the 50-freestyle, 134th in the 200-freestyle, 136th in the 100-backstroke and 77th in the 100-freestyle. Nevins finished 168th in the 50-freestyle and 187th in the 100-freestyle. At last season’s state meet, Marsh finished 12th in the 200- freestyle, 31st in the 100-buttrrfly and 1st in the 400 Medley Relay. Nevins finished 47th at state in the 100-butterfly and 41st in the 200-freestyle.
