Former Sutton principal survives crash in Ottawa County
HUDSONVILLE — Deerfield resident and former Sutton Elementary School principal Deb Langmeyer was involved in a fatal car accident on Saturday, May 23, near Hudsonville, Mich., where an alleged drunk driver crashed into the Langmeyer vehicle, which was parked off the shoulder of I-196 due to a flat tire.According to the Holland Sentinel, the collision killed Langmeyer’s husband, Bernard, age 64. Deb was transported to a nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department issued felony charges for Death by Drunken Driving to 46-year-old Richard L. Rish, of Lakeview, who had legally passed a vehicle, but hit the Langmeyer car after returning to the right lane, according to reports.The Langmeyers were sitting in their vehicle waiting for service to arrive following the flat tire on their Ford C-Max. Rish was driving a 2002 Chevy Tahoe.A third vehicle was involved in the accident. Mark and Jean Vandyke, of Wisconsin, were taken by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Rish was arraigned on Tuesday, May 26. A date for a preliminary hearing is pending.The accident closed the eastbound lane of I-196 for four hours.Deb was employed by the Tecumseh Public Schools from 1991-2013, serving 21 years as principal at Sutton Elementary. In 2009, Deb and her family organized a free Christmas Dinner on December 25 at Tecumseh High School, where they served 183 pounds of turkey, 160 pounds of potatoes and other items.
