Driver is sentenced in death of teens on U.S. 23
The Monroe man who caused a crash on U.S. 23 last summer killing two Tecumseh teens was sentenced to 12-30 years Wednesday in Washtenaw County Trial Court by Judge Archie C. Brown. Travis Donald Cunningham, 20, was sentenced to two consecutive terms of six to 15 years. He was also sentenced to a concurrent three- to five-year term for Operative While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury.On May 12, Cunningham pleaded guilty to two counts of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, one count of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury and one count of Operating While Intoxicated (OWI). Cunningham also received a sentencing of 46 days in jail for OWI; however, he was also given credit for 46 days already served. Cunningham was also ordered to pay $1,611 court costs, $130 victim rights costs and $68 state costs.Tecumseh teens Dakota Gonzales and Curt Orlowski were killed when Cunningham’s truck crossed the median on U.S. 23 and struck their car on July 3, 2014. Erin Lara, a third passenger in the car, was seriously injured. Gonzales and Orlowski had been working in Ann Arbor over the summer in the University of Michigan facilities department and were returning home to Tecumseh when the crash occurred.Orlowski was a sophomore at Northwood University. Gonzales was a student at Cornerstone University where he played soccer.
