Dr. Donald Phelan

Dr. Donald Phelan, age 86, of Tecumseh, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014. He was born August 7, 1927 in Wyandotte, Mich., the son of James and Mary (Bednarek) Phelan. He married Mary Ann Camp on April 8, 1961, who preceded him in death. He honorably served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army.Don practiced dentistry in Tecumseh for 34 years and was also dedicated to community service. He served on the school board for Tecumseh Public Schools for 17 years and on the City of Tecumseh Zoning Board of Appeals for 20 years. He also served 20 years with public elections. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus No. 9937 for 25 years.Don enjoyed golfing, hunting, traveling, and playing cards. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.He is survived by his children Nancy (Brad) Firsich of Cincinnati, Ohio, Susan (Mark) Westrick of Fishers, Ind., Tom (Eileen) Phelan of Cary, N.C., Paula (Steve) Patterson of Lake Orion, Mich., and Meg (Jeff) Brown of Pentwater, Mich., twelve grandchildren, and his brother Al. Don is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Ann of 42 years, his sister Shirley, and his brother Richard.Visitation will be Friday, April 4, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 506 N. Union Street, Tecumseh from 4-8 p.m. with prayer vigil at 7 p.m. The funeral will be at the church on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. He will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Knights of Columbus No. 9937.
