Derek L. Nahabedian

Derek L. Nahabedian of Linden, Mich., age 57, passed peacefully at home, after a long and courageous battle with colon cancer, on July 2, 2020 attended by his wife, family and friends.

Derek was born on January 31, 1963 in Royal Oak, Mich., graduated from Tecumseh High School in Tecumseh, in 1981 and Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. in 1985 with a degree in Computer Science. Derek married the love of his life, Jill Yager on June 26, 2010 and they have two wonderful sons, Nickolas and Lucas.

Derek was employed by Michigan State University as a Data Base Administrator and was an avid Michigan State supporter in a house divided since his wife is an Alumni of University of Michigan.

Derek was a sports star in baseball and football in high school, an avid sportsman, practicing Karate (Black Belt) and playing golf and racquetball while coaching his children in baseball, golf and Karate.

Derek was a man of many interests and whatever he undertook, immersed himself totally in the books, tools and podcasts of the subject until he became the expert. He loved watching movies with his family, playing video games with his boys and especially loved playing one of his many guitars.

Derek was a wonderful husband and father with his mission in life to love his family, especially his wife and sons. Derek was baptized in faith July 1st, knowing that they would be together again.

Left to cherish Derek’s memory are: his wife Jill, two sons, Nickolas and Lucas; mother and step-father, Ann and Owen Merrill; brother, Wayne; step-brother and sister, Brian Merrill and Brycea (Niel) Meyer; father and mother-in-law, Tom and Nancy Yager; brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Jenn Yager; half-brother and half- sister, Richard (Gina) Naha and Laura (Sam) Burton; nieces, Zoe and Emily Nahabedian; nephews, Charlie and Jack Yager; best friend, Sergey and Alicia Dashevskiy and many many close friends and colleagues. His father, Richard Nahabedian, preceded Derek in death.

A heartfelt thanks to Heartland Home Healthcare and Hospice, especially Rose, Derek’s nurse.

A memorial service for Derek is planned at Central Church of the Nazarene, 1261 Bristol Rd, Flint, MI 48507 for 2 p.m., Friday, July 31.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the education of Nickolas and Lucas, checks payable to the “Michigan 529 Advisor Plan” or to Heartland Home Healthcare and Hospice, 6211 Taylor Dr. Flint, MI 48507. Your condolences may be shared with the family at swartzfuneralhomeinc.com.
