Deane Edward Erts

Deane Edward Erts, 68, of Sun City, Ariz., died on Friday, May 1, surrounded by family at Hospice of the Valley in Surprise, Ariz., following a courageous battle against cancer. He was born June 1, 1951 in Denver, Colo. to Sharon Anson and Ralph Erts.

Deane graduated from Morley Stanwood High School in Morley, Mich. and received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. While attending U-M, he enrolled in the ROTC, and later served in the U.S. Navy. He was a long-time staff writer and photographer for the Tecumseh Herald and Homefront magazine.

Survivors include two daughters, Anne Goolsby, of Denver, Colo. and Bethany Jones, of Fort Collins, Colo.; a son, Keith Erts, of Ypsilanti; a brother, Martin Erts, of Sun City; and three nieces, Jennifer Erts, of Surprise, Jessica Zygmont, of Phoenix, Ariz, and Jackie Freimark, of Surprise. Other survivors include Mary Ann Kerttula, of Fort Collins, Colo.; Katherine Lincoln, of Tecumseh; and Heidi Kaminski of Tecumseh.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Charles Anson.

Deane was kind and gentle, an extraordinary writer, a devout Episcopalian and congregant at St. John’s Church in Clinton, an avid bicyclist, photographer and reader, and friend to many. He enjoyed tennis and target shooting. His generosity for helping others had no bounds. His love for family, support of friends and passion for easing the burden of others was all part of this great man who will be sadly missed.
