Clinton picks up 41-19 win over Manchester

For the third straight season, Clinton’s varsity football team has opened with a victory against rival Manchester and each year the spread has been by 12 or more points. This year the Redskins easily defeated the Flying Dutchmen 41-19 at home on Thursday, Aug. 28.Clinton took a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter with standouts Mathew Sexton and Colin Poore each scoring touchdowns. Sexton scored on a 58-yard touchdown pass while Poore scored on a 21-yard run.Manchester scored the only touchdown of the second quarter on a nine-yard pass but the Redskins still held a 14-7 lead heading into the second half.Clinton outscored the Flying Dutchmen 20-6 in the third quarter with Noah Poore rushing the ball into the end zone from 50 yards out.Manchester matched the Redskins’ touchdown with own of its own with just 38 seconds left in the third quarter.However, Clinton’s Poore returned the Dutchmen’s following kick off 84-yards for a touchdown just 21 seconds later and the Redskins took a 34-13 lead into the final quarter with a good point after touchdown kick by Erik Bouse.Sexton scored Clinton’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a big 73-yard run. Bouse centered the uprights and finished all scoring for the Redskins.Bouse converted 6-of-7 extra point kicks. The Flying Dutchmen added the game’s final touchdown with 7:59 remaining in the game to complete all scoring. Clinton head coach Scott McNitt said that his young offensive line, consisting of David Chantelois, Andrew Nienow, Ethan Vaughn, Grant Holbrook, Aaron Fowler, Joe Spence and Blake Rogers, did a solid job of blocking. Noah Poore led Clinton’s rushing attack with 121 yards on eight carries while Sexton had seven carries for 100 yards.Collin Poore (13-76), Brett Tschirhart (2-33), Brad Gilbert (3-13), Noah Saren (2-4) and Karapas (1-1) each added rushing yards for Clinton. Ryan Karapas completed 3-of-5 passes for 72 yards to Sexton (2-63) and Jared Sackett (1-9).Defensively, Sexton led the Redskins in tackles with 15. Karapas had five tackles and broke up a pass while Sackett had two tackles and broke up a pass.Clinton’s Colin Poore (7), Noah Saren (1), Rogers (2), Tschirhart (5), Noah Poore (7), Seth Sylvester (7), Ken DeShano (8, 1 sack), Chantelois (3), Joshua Brown (2), Holbrook (3), Aaron Fowler (6, 2 sacks), Spence (2), Alex McIntosh (2) each added tackles while Kaden Kelly had an interception. Clinton’s Offensive Player of the Game was Noah Poore while defensive honors went to Ken DeShano. Clinton’s Special Teams Player of the Game was Collin Poore while Brad Gilbert was named Red Army Player of the Week. Clinton was scheduled to travel to Blissfield for a non-conference match-up on Friday, Sept. 5, beginning at 7 p.m. However, the Royals forfeited the game due to a lack of players. Clinton was unable to find another team to compete with so the varsity football team will have a bye week and will be playing an eight game schedule, according to athletic director Casey Randolph.
