Clinton edges Morenci 28-26 to remain undefeated

Possibly the most highly anticipated varsity football game of the week featuring undefeated Clinton and Morenci finished with a two-point win by the hosting Redskins.Clinton defeated Morenci 28-26 during its annual homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 3, after the Redskin defense stopped the Bulldogs’ two-point conversion attempt with only 26 seconds remaining in the game to secure the victory. Clinton went into the final quarter with 22-13 lead but the Bulldogs made it a two-point game with 4:48 left in the final quarter.Noah Poore increased Clinton’s lead to 28-20 on a 42-yard touchdown run with 2:15 on the clock but Morenci hit the end zone with just 23 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs attempted a two-point conversion run to tie the game but was stopped before entering the end zone.Mathew Sexton (18-182), Noah Poore (6-82), Collin Poore (13-79) and Jared Sackett (2-70) led Clinton’s offense with the Redskins accumulating over 400 yards of rushing during the night.Noah Poore scored two touchdowns (16-yard reception, 44-yard run) while Sexton (16-yard run, 2-point pass) and Sackett (70-yard run) each scored one.Erik Bouse hit two extra point kicks to round out Clinton’s scoring. Offensive linemen David Chantelois, Zach Nienow, Alex McIntosh, Ken DeShano. Ethan Vaughn and Aaron Fowler did a fine job blocking in the trenches, according to Clinton coach Scott McNitt. Defensively, Matthew Sexton led the way with 14 tackles while Seth Sylvester added 12. Collin Poore (2, interception), Noah Saren (1), Blake Rogers (5), Noah Poore (9), DeShano (7, sack), Vaughn (3, sack, blocked field goal), Chantelois (4), Fowler (5, sack), and Nienow (3) added tackles. Clinton’s Offensive Player of the Game was Sexton while Poore was named the Defensive Player of the Game. Ethan Barrett was named Red Army Player of the Game while Ethan Vaughn was named Special Teams player of the Week. Clinton improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Tri-County Conference (TCC) with the win. The Redskins travel to Summerfield on Friday for another key TCC game. Clinton’s junior varsity team lost 50-14 at Morenci on Thursday, Oct. 2. It was the first loss of the season for the JVs (4-1-1).
