City council secures salt contract with state

At the Monday, Oct. 20, Tecumseh City Council meeting, council unanimously approved authorizing Tecumseh City Manger Kevin Welch to sign an agreement with Detroit Salt Company for rock salt. Tim Bock, Supt. of Tecumseh’s Department of Public Works was able to negotiate with the State of Michigan for the salt needs of the city, eliminating the need for the city to seek bids for salt on its own.The city is spending $90,870 on 1,500 tons of salt at $60.58 per ton. According to Bock, who was present at the meeting, the city has about 100 tons of rock salt remaining, adding that the city went through about 1,500 tons last year, which the city paid $39.01 per ton for then. Mayor Richard Johnson asked what the contingency was if the city was to run short on salt. “If we really had to, which we don’t want to, we could use slag sand,” Welch said. “There are other options. We would want to avoid them if we could.” Welch added during the presentation of the City Manager’s Report that the demolition company working at the former Tecumseh Products Company property has stated that it believes its demolition work is complete. Welch said that city disagrees the company is done, and is using legal matters to bring them back to finish the work. In other business, council:• Recognized Eagle Scout Samuel Andersen of Troop 632 for his work cleaning up the believed site of Native American Dancing Grounds at Indian Crossing Trails Park.• Heard from David Righter, Brookside Cemetery Supt., the annual report for the cemetery.• Approved Amelia’s Army 5k Run for November 1 beginning at 9 a.m. at Herrick Park Elementary School. The event is scheduled to conclude at 10: 30 a.m.• Adjourned into closed session for labor negotiations and considered the purchase of real property.
