Catherine B. Smith

Catherine B. Smith, 88, of Britton and Tecumseh, Michigan, died July 17, 2016 under the compassionate care of Cambrian Memory Care and Hospice of Lenawee.

Born August 9, 1927, in Milan Township, Monroe County, Michigan, “Kate” was the daughter of Laura (Pilbeam) and Irving Grady.

On April 26, 1947, she married Kenneth Smith at the Britton Congregational Church; he preceded her in death in January 1995.

Besides her beloved husband Kenny, Kate was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Neil and Laurence; sisters Joan Grady, Joyce Green, and Frances Schadewald.

Catherine was a graduate of Britton High School and Eastern Michigan University.  She taught in rural schools in Lenawee and Washtenaw counties, Dundee Elementary, and Britton-Macon. Her teaching career spanned 35 years and she touched the lives of hundreds of students.

She was a member of the Britton Woman’s Club, the Mary-Martha Circle of the Congregational Church, and loved helping with the church’s annual turkey dinner.

Surviving Kate are her two sons, Randall (Kerry) Smith of Tecumseh and Bradley Smith of Las Vegas; a grandson, Jason Smith of Toledo; three granddaughters including Nicole (Darrell) Eaton of Tecumseh, Michelle (Ronald) Martin of Dansville and Rachel (Ricky) Hudson of Ft. Worth, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Jazmin, Leyah, Carter, Destiny and Madelyn; a sister, Marjorie Hamden of Dundee; a brother, Gerald (Sharon) Grady of Costa Mesa, Calif.; sisters-in-law Ann Grady and Shirley Atkins; brother-in-law Charles Schadewald; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Catherine will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2016, at the Britton Congregational Church with Pastor Jim  Schenck officiating.  Visitation will be held at the Britton Congregational Church on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.   Burial of cremains will take place at Pleasantview Cemetery in Petersburg at a later date.  

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralservices.com.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Britton Congregational Church or the Britton Macon Schools. Envelopes are available at the Anderson Funeral Home in Adrian.
