Backyard chicken advocates gave ‘ample and compelling data’ to support position

To the Editor,It’s hard to understand the Tecumseh City Council’s refusal to allow backyard chickens — even on an experimental basis. A cousin of mine (in a different state) has some, and when I visit, it’s fun to go out in the morning and collect fresh eggs — and know under what conditions they were produced.Strangely, none of the city council members, nor the city manager, could give one good reason for the chicken ban. On the other hand, a number of chicken advocates, who actually did some research, gave ample and compelling data showing that Michigan communities allowing chickens have not had any serious problems.I would suggest some common sense here. Many people care about where their food comes from. And not only are chickens productive little birds (think omelets!), but they do not whinny or moo, nor do they howl at the moon when in heat. And, unlike some dogs, which are approved animals in Tecumseh, they neither bark nor bite.Perhaps the members of the council’s brains were scrambled by other issues at the time, but maybe they still can change one of their ordinances before they all have egg on their faces.Patricia SchnappAdrian
