Annual Spring Bulb Show bursts with color at HLG conservatory
On Friday, March 13, Hidden Lake Gardens hosted its first-ever Spring Bulb Show preview, a sneak peak for members only of the gardens’ annual show located in the temperate house at the conservatory. Ninety-three people attended the show preview, according to Paul Pfeifer, Managing Director at Hidden Lake Gardens. The show opened to the public March 14 and runs through March 29. “We were all pleasantly surprised at the number of folks here and the enthusiasm,” said Pfeifer. “It was a nice event. We hope to do more.” Pfeifer said that the extra member activities the gardens is trying to host stems from this year being the 70th anniversary the property was gifted to Michigan State University from Harry A. Fee, an Adrian businessman, in 1945.“We thought, maybe we could have an opportunity to give back to members as a way for thanking them for all they do for Hidden Lake Gardens,” said Pfeifer “We’re trying to do more things for our members. The idea arose from the plant sale in May. The night before the plant sale, members can come to shop first, before it opens to the public the next day.” Diane Faust, Conservatory Manager at Hidden Lake Gardens, said when she orders the bulbs for the show, she tries to maintain a color scheme. This year, she said, the show focuses on pastel colors like purples, pinks, and lighter shades of blues and lavenders. “I try to shake things up ever year,” Faust said. The show is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week and is free to members. The $3 admission fee into Hidden Lake Gardens for non-members includes admittance into the Spring Bulb Show.Membership includes free admission, newsletters, programs, events and bulletins, 10 to 20 percent discount on courses, workshops and lectures, 10 percent discount on gift shop merchandise, admittance into the plant sale preview, and reciprocal gardens program.
